China is not deliberately evading sanctions against Russia. Beijing warned that the effects of the sanctions risked leading to a currency and trade war.
The statement came a day after the European Union warned Beijing at a virtual EU-China summit on Friday about sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
Wang Lutong, Director General of European Affairs at the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said China contributes to the global economy by conducting normal trade with Russia.
"China is not a party to the Ukraine crisis. We don't think our normal trade with other countries should be affected," he said, Saturday (2/4), as quoted by Reuters.
China has refused to condemn Russia's actions in Ukraine or call it an invasion, and has repeatedly criticized Western sanctions as illegal and unilateral.
"We are against sanctions, and the effects of these sanctions also risk spreading around the world, leading to currency wars, trade and financial wars," Wang said.
"And also risk endangering supply chains and industrial chains and globalization and even the economic fabric," he said.
