Ukraine's ambassador to the United States asked the US Congress for further assistance, saying Russia had used vacuum bombs on Monday (28/2) in its invasion of Ukraine.
"They used a vacuum bomb today, which is actually prohibited by the Geneva convention," Ambassador Oksana Markarova said after a meeting with members of the US Congress.
"The devastation that Russia is trying to inflict on Ukraine is enormous."
Vacuum bombs use oxygen from the surrounding air to produce a high-temperature explosion, typically producing a blast wave with a much longer duration than a conventional explosion.
Markarova said Ukraine was working actively with President Joe Biden's Administration and the US Congress to get more weapons and tougher sanctions on Russia.
"They (Russia) have to pay, they have to pay a heavy price," he told reporters after a meeting with members of the US Congress.
Initial ceasefire talks between Moscow and Kyiv on Monday failed to secure a breakthrough, with Russia shelling residential areas in Ukraine's second-largest city Kharkiv and other areas of the country after negotiations.
