Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that providing Ukraine with air defense systems, as requested by the Ukrainian president in the US Congress the day before, would be a destabilizing factor that will not bring peace to the country.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged American lawmakers on Wednesday to do more to protect his country from a Russian invasion, pushing for the imposition of a no-fly zone and calling for aircraft and defense systems.
"Such a transfer ... will be a destabilizing factor that will definitely not bring peace to Ukraine," foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a news conference.
"In the long term, they could have far more dangerous consequences," he added.
The United States and its allies want to avoid NATO being drawn into the Ukraine conflict, but they have been supplying Kyiv with military aid since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
Moscow has called its attacks in Ukraine a "special operation" to destroy the military capabilities of its southern neighbor and capture what it considers dangerous nationalists.
Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger on Sunday said NATO could discuss sending the Soviet-made S-300 air defense system to Ukraine.
