Deputy Prime Minister of Poland, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, on Tuesday (15/3) urged that international peacekeepers be sent to Ukraine immediately.
Kaczynski's remarks were made during a press conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Slovenian Prime Minister Janes Janza were also present in Kyiv.
"I think there needs to be a peacekeeping mission, from NATO or some broader international structure. A mission that will be able to defend itself, that will operate on Ukrainian territory," Kaczynski said, as quoted by Reuters.
Prime ministers from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia reportedly came to Kyiv by train. The three of them are the first foreign leaders to visit the capital since last month's invasion.
Zelensky thanked his neighbors. He said the country's leaders fear nothing and are more afraid of the fate of Ukrainians.
"We really trust these countries and the leaders of these countries. We are 100% confident that everything we discussed will achieve its goals for our country, our security and our future," Zelensky said.
The Czech Republic and Poland, which are members of the European Union and NATO, have been among Ukraine's strongest backers in Europe since the Russian invasion. The two countries are expected to bring some hope in the form of security assistance to Ukraine.
"It is our duty to be in a place where history is being forged. Because this is not about us, but about the future of our children, who deserve to live in a world free from tyranny," Morawiecki wrote on his social media account.
The plan for the visit of the three heads of state was agreed at the European Union leaders' summit in Versailles, France, last week. However, the European Union confirmed that it did not give a formal mandate for the visit.
