One Month of Invasion, Russia's Combat Strength in Ukraine is said to be Declining

US defense officials say that currently Russia's fighting power in Ukraine has begun to decline. The US estimates the numbers are down to 90% from pre-invasion levels last February.

The US side initially estimated that Russia had deployed more than 150,000 troops around Ukraine before the February 24 invasion. This includes aircraft, artillery, tanks and other weapons for full-scale attacks.

The defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he regretted the decline in power after the Russian invasion caused a lot of destruction and caused many civilian casualties.

One month since the invasion began, Russian troops in fact have not managed to capture a single city in Ukraine. However, Russia continued to bombard cities with artillery, missiles and bombs. Many of them are about civilians.

Most of the bombings were focused on the Mariupol port in the southeast. US defense officials report Russian Navy forces have been bombarding Mariupol from the Sea of Azov over the past 24 hours.

The invasion, which has lasted for one month, is said to have also provided losses for Russia, especially from an economic point of view. The high cost of war is said to have started to make Russia difficult.

The US has warned that Russia may seek help from China. However, the White House said it had not seen evidence of China providing military equipment to Russia.

"We continue to see indications that they are having these discussions, and that they are making such a plan both in terms of supply, as well as reinforcement," US officials said Tuesday.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has left the country caught up in a flurry of economic sanctions from around the world. This condition raises fears of a wider conflict in the West that was unthinkable for decades.

Until now, Russia has not reported any war casualties from its side. The latest report, delivered on March 2, showed that 498 soldiers were killed and 1,597 injured.

Since then, however, Ukrainian forces have managed to apply more pressure so that Russian casualties are thought to have increased.
