The old Ukrainian fighter jets are claimed to be able to provide resistance to Russia, which continued to pound the former Soviet Union during the three-week invasion.
Ukraine's defense equipment power is in the spotlight because before the war broke out, according to data from the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the country had a total of 125 combat-capable aircraft.
Of that number, 37 of them are Mikoyan MiG-29 aircraft, 34 Sukhoi Su-27, 14 Sukhoi Su-24M bombers, and 31 short-range air support aircraft, Sukhoi Su-24.
The armament of this Ukrainian fighter jet is considered obsolete. The newest MiG-29s were only produced 30 years ago. Meanwhile, Russia began the invasion with a series of massive missile strikes against Ukrainian airfields, command posts and ammunition depots to cripple Kyiv's air power.
But apparently, Russia failed to completely cripple Ukraine's air defenses and could not completely control the country's airspace.
According to Pentagon records, Ukraine carries out five to 10 sorties per day, while Russia does about 200. However, Kyiv still kept the plane safe.
According to Ukraine's claim, they did not suffer much loss, both in terms of weapons and military personnel.
On March 11, a US Department of Defense official said the Ukrainian Air Force still had about 56 warplanes or about 80 percent of the air fleet before the invasion.
The US stated that Ukraine can still retain most of the defense equipment because it effectively uses air missile defense systems on the ground.
"They're careful with what they shoot. They move things around. They're very agile, and it's proven to be effective," the US Department of Defense official said.
After three weeks of all-out war, Ukraine's air defenses still have hope.
According to the Kyiv Independence report, these Ukrainian troops not only managed to defend and repel Russian missile attacks, but also prevented Moscow from taking control of the air.
Ukrainian Air Defense is said to be very effective in defending Kyiv from Russian cruise and ballistic missiles.
However, conditions were different when Russia attacked Kharkiv, Mariupol, or Chernihiv. There, the Ukrainian defense is not as strong as in Kyiv.
Until now, Russia has been under attack from Ukraine since the invasion began on February 24. Since then, fighting and explosions have continued to take lives.
According to the United Nations, the number of civilians killed since Russia's aggression into Ukraine stands at 636 and 1,125 were injured. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government reported that civilian casualties had reached at least 2,000.
Russia is willing to end the invasion if Ukraine promises not to join NATO and other international defense alliances. They also want Crimea to be recognized as part of Russian territory.
Meanwhile, Ukraine demanded a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops. They also emphasized that Ukraine would not relinquish their sovereign territory.
