Russia's Defense Ministry said its military attacked Ukraine with cruise missiles from warships in the Black and Caspian Seas, and hypersonic missiles from Crimean airspace.
Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said the Kinzhal hypersonic missile hit the Ukrainian fuel depot in Kostiantynivka, near the port of Mykolaiv on the Black Sea.
"The Kalibr cruise missile was launched from the waters of the Black Sea against the Nizhyn factory repairing Ukrainian armored vehicles damaged in battle," he said Sunday, March 20, as quoted by Al Jazeera.
The attack marked the second day in a row Russia has used the Kinzhal, a weapon capable of striking targets 2,000 km away at 10 times the speed of sound.
Konashenkov added that another attack by an air-launched missile hit a facility in Ovruch in Ukraine's Northern Zhytomyr Region, where foreign fighters and Ukrainian special forces are based.
A day earlier, the Russian military said the Kinzhal had been used for the first time in combat to destroy an ammunition depot in Diliatyn in the Carpathian Mountains of Western Ukraine.
The Kinzhal missile was part of a series of weapons launched in 2018. Russia first used hypersonic missiles during its military campaign in Syria in 2016.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Kinzhal missile an "ideal weapon" given its speed and ability to overcome air defense systems.
Ukraine on Monday rejected Russian calls to hand over the port city of Mariupol, where residents are besieged with little food, water and electricity.
"There are no questions about surrender, laying down of arms," the Ukrainska Pravda news portal quoted Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk as saying on Monday morning.
"We have informed the Russian side about this," Vereshchuk said, as reported by Reuters.
Russia had previously asked Ukrainian troops in Mariupol to lay down their arms, saying a "terrible humanitarian catastrophe" was unfolding.
