Russia and China called in a joint statement Friday for NATO to halt its expansion into Eastern Europe.
The joint statement came during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to China for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
The Russian Presidential Palace said Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping held warm and substantive talks in Beijing, describing the relationship as a continued partnership with a special character.
Putin and Xi opposed further expansion of NATO under US command and called on the alliance to abandon its "ideological Cold War approach".
Stopping the addition of new NATO member states to Eastern Europe is Russia's main demand in its dispute with the West over Ukraine.
Only, the US has rejected some of Moscow's main proposals but has said it is willing to discuss other topics such as arms control.
China also supports Russia's proposal to create legally binding security guarantees in Europe, the joint statement said.
