EU Ready to Invest $1.8 Billion in Morocco

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Wednesday that the European Union will invest 1.6 billion euros, or about $1.8 billion, in Morocco to promote green energy and the digital transition.

Green energy is energy produced from natural resources, such as sunlight, wind or water.

"We are working on developing a green partnership or Morocco and the European Union," he said after a meeting with Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch in the capital Rabat.

Then also added, "This is the first time we have developed this cooperation with a partner country."

Morocco will be the first country to receive funding as part of the EU's $343 billion “Global Gateway” infrastructure project to promote sustainable development in partner countries.

Von der Leyen said the funds for Morocco would be allocated to greener energy and broad digital partnerships to strengthen connectivity between EU and Moroccan companies.

“Much can be done to better integrate and adapt our economy. This will benefit the company, our employees and all of our workers,” he added.
